Show of hands if you have 5 times as many toys in your house than your kids actually need. Show of hands if those toys are mostly just collecting dust about two weeks after they are received. Same here. We are starting to lean more towards experience gifts for the kids, and it has been wonderful.
Right before Christmas, we surprised the girls with their first gift- a trip to Medieval Times in Orlando, Florida! They had so much fun, and so did we! Just like most little girls their age, they love castles and princesses, and knights. So dinner and a joust at Medieval Times was right up their alley.
When we got there we were upgraded to the front row. If you have the option to make this upgrade, I highly recommend it. Especially if you have younger kids. It really held their attention and made us all feel like we were a part of the show.
The dinner part of this show is actually REALLY good
I’ll be completely honest, I was most excited about the dinner. You eat with your hands and they serve all of my favorite foods: tomato bisque, garlic toast, yummy chicken, and potatoes. What was even more amazing was how much the kids enjoyed the food as well! I think there was something magical about learning there was no silverware in the Medieval Times, because they gobbled their food right up. I don’t remember the last meal we’ve had without a fight at home, maybe I should ban utensils as well.
We were in the yellow knights section, and they had a blast cheering him on all evening. He lost- but we think he did awesome anyway! Yellow happens to be Violet’s favorite color, so that was an added bonus. The girls were very lucky. In addition to being in the front row, Violet caught a flower from the yellow knight and Ivy was awarded his ribbon! Violet’s flower actually landed in her soup, which is a memory we still laugh about.
Experience gifts really are the way to go. I think most parents can agree that we have more than enough toys in our homes. They add stress and anxiety to all of us, and they seem to get played with for two weeks before they get tossed. Medieval Times was a great experience to have and we have so many memories that will last us well beyond the length any toy would make it in our home.
